(The Correlation Between Students Interest In Listening To English Songs And Their Speaking Ability)

The thesis discusses The Correlation between StudentsInterest in listening to English songs and their Speaking ability. The background of this study is that song is one of the most attracting and culturally rich resources that can easily be used in language classroom. So, learning English through song is an exciting method of learning. Furthermore, speaking is seen as the central skill. The desire to communicate with others, often face to face and in real time drives us to attempt to speak fluently and correctly. The study is aimed at responding the following questions: 1) how is the students interest in listening to English songs at the eighth grade of SMP N 16 Semarang?, 2) How is the students speaking ability at the eighth grade of SMP N 16 Semarang?, 3) How is the correlation between students interest in listening to English songs and their speaking ability at the eighth grade of SMP N 16 Semarang?. This study uses a quantitative approach with correlation method and analyzed by mean of correlation product moment. It was conducted the eighth grade of SMP N 16 Semarang in the academic year of 2010/2011. The data are collected with some techniques; questionnaire and speaking test. The result of the study shows that students interest in listening to English songs (X) has 121.16 categories in interval 121-123 with frequency 35.5%. It means that the students interest is moderate in listening to English songs. While students speaking ability (Y) has 80.4 category in interval 79 - 80 with frequency 22.6%. It means that students speaking ability is very good. It can be seen from the total score of the respondent. Students interest in listening to English song (X) has a positive correlation with Students speaking ability (Y) because the correlation coefficient is 0.538 with enough category in interval 0.40 0.599. Based on correlation coefficient, it can be drawn a conclusion that there is a positive correlation between students interest in listening to English songs and speaking ability. Because rh = 0.538 > rt = 0.355 for the level 5% is significant, so Ha There is correlations between students interest in listening to English songs and speaking ability is accepted. The writer suggest that the teacher and headmaster should improve students interest in listening to English song, because it as an alternative way to increase their speaking ability. Next, the students should practice more to use in speaking English in their conversation learning and always consult their teacher and dictionary.
