THE EFFECTIVENESS OF TEACHER INDIRECT FEEDBACK TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING RECOUNT TEXT

Abstrak:

Penelitian ini mengkaji tentang keefektifan umpan balik dari guru secara tertulis dengan menggunakan strategi umpan balik secara tidak langsung guna meningkatkan tulisan teks recount siswa yang ditunjukkan dengan adanya peningkatan nilai siswa dalam menulis teks recount. penelitian ini juga menelaah tanggapan siswa terhadap penerapan umpan balik secara tidak langsung dari guru. penelitian ini menggunakan quasi experimental design. latihan-latihan menulis dan kuesioner digunakan untuk memperoleh data. 76 siswa kelas delapan di sebuah sekolah menengah pertama di garut dilibatkan sebagai sampel dalam penelitian ini dan dibagi ke dalam dua kelompok. satu kelas sebagai kelompok eksperimen, yaitu umpan balik secara tidak langsung dari guru diterapkan sebagai perlakuan, yakni siswa harus merevisi teks mereka berdasarkan umpan balik secara tidak langsung dari guru dan satu kelas sebagai kelompok kontrol harus merevisi teks mereka berdasarkan pengetahuan mereka. hasil perhitungan uji t untuk nilai draft terakhir kedua kelompok menunjukkan bahwa thitung lebih besar dari ttabel (6.545 > 0.93). hal tersebut berarti bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara nilai draft terakhir kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol. perolehan data kuesioner juga menyatakan bahwa tanggapan siswa terhadap penerapan umpan balik secara tidak langsung dari guru adalah positif. kata kunci: keefektifan, umpan balik secara tidak langsung dari guru, teks recount Abstract The study focused on the effectiveness of teacher written feedback by using indirect feedback strategy to improve students’ ability in writing recount text that is shown by the improvement of students’ score in writing recount text. in addition, this study discovered students’ responses toward the implementation of teacher indirect feedback. 76 students of eighth grade in a junior high school in garut were involved in this study as the samples and divided into two groups. one class as the experimental group in which teacher indirect feedback was applied as the treatment where students were asked to revise their recount text based on indirect feedback from the teacher and one class as the control group that were asked to revise their text based on their understanding. this study employed a quasi experimental design. writing practices and questionnaires were administered to obtain the data. the result of independent t-test of last draft scores in both groups shows that tobtained was higher than tcritical (6.545 > 0.93). it means that there was a significant difference between students’ last draft scores of the experimental group and the control group. in addition, the results of questionnaires show that students’ responses toward the use of teacher indirect feedback were positive. keywords: the effectiveness, teacher indirect feedback, recount text.
