PENGGUNAAN APLIKASI ENGLISH LEAP UNTUK MENINGKATKAN HASIL BELAJAR SISWA PADA MATA PELAJARAN BAHASA INGGRIS : Eksperimen di Sekolah Menengah Pertama Negeri 1 Lembang

Abstrak:

Latar belakang dilakukan penelitian ini diantaranya adalah dunia pendidikan yang selalu dituntut untuk menciptakan inovasi untuk proses pembelajaran, tingkat pemahaman siswa terhadap grammar dalam Bahasa Inggris, jumlah pengguna smartphone Android yang banyak dari kalangan pelajar akademisi, dan mayoritas hanya digunakan untuk mengakses jejaring sosial. Penelitian ini menjawab permasalahan penelitian yang telah dirumuskan, yaitu “Apakah terdapat perbedaan yang positif dan signifikan sebelum dan sesudah siswa menggunakan aplikasi English Leap?” Secara lebih rinci rumusan masalah terdiri dari (1) Apakah terdapat perbedaan yang positif dan signifikan ranah kognitif aspek mengingat sebelum dan sesudah siswa menggunakan aplikasi English Leap?; (2) Apakah terdapat perbedaan yang positif dan signifikan ranah kognitif aspek memahami sebelum dan sesudah siswa menggunakan aplikasi English Leap?. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode eksperimen dengan desain One Group Pretest Postest Design menggunakan satu kelas eksperimen. Instrumen yang digunakan berupa tes objektif. Teknik pengambilan sampel dilakukan dengan Simple Random Sampling dengan menggunakan tabel bilangan random. Uji normalitas data menggunakan uji chi kuadrat, dan uji hipotesis menggunakan Uji T Paired Sample T Test, Kesimpulan umum hasil penelitian ini adalah terdapat perbedaan hasil belajar yang positif dan signifikan antara sebelum dan sesudah menggunakan aplikasi English Leap pada mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Kata Kunci: Media Pembelajaran, Mobile Learning, English Leap, Hasil Belajar Siswa, Bahasa Inggris. The background of the research is that education is always expected to create innovation in learning process, the level of student’s understanding of English grammar, the number of android smartphone users that mostly are students and they use it most only to access social network. The research answers the defined research problem, that is “Is there any positive and significant difference before and after the students use English Leap application?” The formulation of the problem in more detail consists of (1) Is there any positive and significant difference in cognitive aspect of memorizing before and after the students use English Leap application?; (2) Is there any positive and significant difference in cognitive aspect of comprehension before and after the students use English Leap application?. The research uses experiment method with One Group Pretest Postest Design using one class experiment. The instrument used is objective test. The sampling is done by Simple Random Sampling technique that uses table of random number. Data normality test uses chi quadratic, and hypothesis test uses T Paired Sample T Test. The general conclusion of the research is that there exists positive and significant difference of leaning outcome before and after the use of English Leap application on English subject. Teaching English Concrete Nouns Using Pictionary Game (An Experimental Study With the Fourth Graders of SDN 01 Donowangun Talun Pekalongan in the Academic Year of 2010/2011)

Abstrak:

This thesis discusses the effectiveness of teaching English concrete noun using Pictionary game to the fourth graders of elementary school. The background of the study in this research is based on the phenomena that students in SDN 01 Donowangun Pekalongan usually get bored to learn vocabulary especially on concrete nouns. So the teacher should device a good exercise or a way of teaching English concrete nouns. Learning vocabulary at Elementary School can be done through many ways, so the researcher teaches vocabulary using Pictionary game. This game may become an alternative way to teach English nouns for beginning level. It is more emphasizing on active learning and language teaching, because it makes students more active.
The problems of this research can be stated as follows: Is using Pictionary game effective to facilitate students learning of English concrete nouns in the fourth graders of SDN 01 Donowangun?
The purpose is: To know whether or not using Pictionary game is effective to improve students English concrete nouns in the fourth graders of SD Negeri 01 Donowangun Talun Pekalongan.
The method of the research is experimental study. The data is obtained by giving test to the experimental class and control class after giving a different learning to both classes.
The number of the subjects is twenty in each class. They are IV A is as experimental class (the students who are taught using Pictionary game), and IV A control class (the students who are not taught using Pictionary game).
The instruments used to collect the data were: documentation and test. The documentation was used to get the data of students name list that become respondents, syllabus and lesson plan. Test was used to know students competence before and after the experiment run. There are two kinds of test. They are pre-test and post test.
The result of the research: The use of Pictionary game as technique in teaching concrete nouns was effective. There was a significance difference in the achievement between students in class IV A (experimental class) and students in class IV B (control class). It is showed of the mean of experimental class is higher than control class (80.70 > 73.35). On the other hand, the test of hypothesis using t-test formula shows the value of the t-test is higher than the value of the t-table. The value is (3.141>1.68). The hypothesis is accepted.

The thesis discusses The Correlation between StudentsInterest in listening to English songs and their Speaking ability. The background of this study is that song is one of the most attracting and culturally rich resources that can easily be used in language classroom. So, learning English through song is an exciting method of learning. Furthermore, speaking is seen as the central skill. The desire to communicate with others, often face to face and in real time drives us to attempt to speak fluently and correctly. The study is aimed at responding the following questions: 1) how is the students interest in listening to English songs at the eighth grade of SMP N 16 Semarang?, 2) How is the students speaking ability at the eighth grade of SMP N 16 Semarang?, 3) How is the correlation between students interest in listening to English songs and their speaking ability at the eighth grade of SMP N 16 Semarang?. This study uses a quantitative approach with correlation method and analyzed by mean of correlation product moment. It was conducted the eighth grade of SMP N 16 Semarang in the academic year of 2010/2011. The data are collected with some techniques; questionnaire and speaking test. The result of the study shows that students interest inlistening to English songs (X) has 121.16 categories in interval 121-123 with frequency 35.5%. It means that the students interest is moderate in listening to English songs. While students speaking ability (Y) has 80.4 category in interval 79 - 80 with frequency 22.6%. It means that students speaking ability is very good. It can be seen from the total score of the respondent. Students interest in listening to English song (X) has a positive correlation with Students speaking ability (Y) because the correlation coefficient is 0.538 with enough category in interval 0.40 0.599. Based on correlation coefficient, it can be drawn a conclusion that there is a positive correlation between students interest in listening to English songs and speaking ability. Because rh = 0.538 > rt = 0.355 for the level 5% is significant, so Ha There is correlations between students interest in listening to English songs and speaking ability is accepted. The writer suggest that the teacher and headmaster should improve students interest in listening to English song, because it as an alternative way to increase their speaking ability. Next, the students should practice more to use in speaking English in their conversation learning and always consult their teacher and dictionary.

Background of this study is to know the appropriate technique to teach English especially listening on news item texts. Indonesian learners who study English as second language still get difficulty in listening because the spoken language and written language is quite different with their mother tongue. So the researcher thought that there should be a solution to solve that problem. The researcher tried to use video as a medium to solve the problem and to improve students ability in listening especially on news item texts.This study is about the use of video as a medium to help and to improve students listening ability on news item texts of the tenth grade students of MA Matholiul Huda Pucakwangi - Pati in the academic year 2011/2012. The statement of the problem in this study is: How is the effectiveness of teaching listening on news item text using video with the tenth Year Students of MA MATHOLIUL HUDA Pucakwangi - Pati in the academic year of 2011/2012?. The objective of this study is to find out the effectiveness of teaching listening news item text using video.The population of the research was the tenth grade students of MA Matholiul Huda Pucakwangi Pati. The research methodology was an experimental research, which conducted in two classes; the experimental group (X A) and control group (X B) as sample. The data collection methods of this research are documentation and test. In this research X A was taught by using video, while X B was taught without video (conventional method; recording). The researcher gave listening test to gather the data. The test had been tried out to find out the validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discriminating power before it was used to gather the data. The formula that was used to analyze the data was t-test. It was used to determine whether or not there was a significance difference between students score in experimental group and students score in control group.

After the data had been collected by using test, it was found that the pre-test average of the experimental group was 61.81 and control group was 60.14. It was found that t-test was (0.686), whereas the t-table was (1.671) for a = 5%. The t-test score was higher than the t-table (0.686 > 1.671). It was mean that Ho was accepted while Ha was rejected. It could be concluded that both of X A and X B had no differences (homogeneous). While, the post-test average of the experimental group was 74.17 and control group was 70.00. It was found that t-test was (1.898), whereas the t-table was (1.671) for a = 5%. The t-test score was higher than the t-table (1.898 > 1.671). It was mean that Ha was accepted while Ho was rejected. Since t-test score was higher than the t-table, using video was effective medium to improve students listening on news item texts.

This study is based on the importance of reading comprehension but in fact the students ability in comprehending the reading text is low. The problem of this research can be stated as follow: 1. How is the implementation of group investigation method to improve students reading ability in descriptive text? 2. How is the improvement of students reading ability in descriptive text after being taught through using group nvestigation? Its purposes are: 1. To describe the implementation of group investigation method to improve students reading ability in descriptive text. 2. To identify the improvement of students reading ability in descriptive text after being taught through using group investigation method. To achieve the objectives of the study, the writer conducted classroom action research. This classroom action research was held at MTs Sabilul Ulum Mayong Jepara. The subject of the study was the grade VIII C. There were 42 students; 23 girls and 19 boys. The writer carried out three steps. The first step was the pre-cycle. The second step was the action. The action consisted of two cycles. The difference between these cycles was on topic of material used. Each cycle consisted of teaching and learning process and a test. Data collection was done using observation, test and interview. In analyzing the data, the writer used a descriptive qualitative and a simple quantitative measurement to find the result. The analysis of the data showed that there was a significant difference of the students achievement in the pre-cycle up to second cycle. The average of the students achievement in the pre-cycle was 57.73, the first cycle was 64.05 and the second cycle was 75.23. Based on this finding, it is suggested that Group Investigation method can be used by the teachers to improve students ability in reading comprehension.

How effective is comic strips to facilitate students reading comprehension skill in narrative text? Its purposes are: 

1. To describe the implementation of comic strips to facilitate students reading comprehension skill in narrative text. 2. To identify the effectiveness of students reading comprehension skill in narrative text. To achieve the objectives of the study, the writer conducted classroom action research. This classroom action research was held at SMPN 2 Tanggungharjo Grobogan. The experimental group of the study was the grade VIII C and the control group was VIII B. There were 32 students in each class. The data collection technique was test, data, and interview. In analyzing the data, the writer used a simple quantitative measurement to find the result. The analysis of the data showed that there was a significant difference of the students achievement in the experimental group and control group. The average of post test for the control group was 51.3 and the score for the experimental group was 71. Based on this finding, it is suggested that comic strips was quite effective medium to facilitate students reading comprehension skill of narrative text.

The teaching of English includes four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Speaking is one of the most difficult aspects for students to master. Thats why teaching speaking skill is generally felt challenging for young learner especially the fourth graders of SD Hj Isriati 1 Semarang because it needs more attractive activities. In order to reach the successfulness of teaching and learning process, teacher should provides good material, methods and learning assessments.

This research is aimed at finding the answer to the following research questions: How is the implementation of English teaching and learning process of speaking in terms of material, teaching methods, and learning assessments at the fourth grades of SD Hj Isriati 1 Semarang? 

The objective of this study is to identify the implementation of English teaching and learning process of  speaking class in terms of material, teaching methods, and learning assessments at the fourth grade of SD Hj Isriati Baiturrahman 1 Semarang. This study is a descriptive research. Data collection is done using observation, documentation, and interview. To analyze the data, descriptive qualitative analysis is used; it is to present the result of study in the form of descriptive explanation. 

Result of the study shows some findings. The material of speaking class is taken from English Workbook for Elementary School which gives the students some practices of speaking skill. The methods implemented in teaching speaking are CLT, PPP and Direct Method. The learning assessments are done by performing pair dialogue, giving students tasks and asking students to make sentences.

Based on the result of the study, the writer suggests that in teaching speaking skill to young learner teachers should create an interesting, enjoyable, and fun class atmosphere in speaking class. This result hopefully can inspire teachers in teaching speaking, especially for the level of elementary school students.

Speaking ability is an important aspect and beneficial skill in learning language, it is a part of the goal or skill in learning English in the curriculum besides writing, reading, and listening. Through speaking, people convey what they mean by arranging a set of words which contain a subject talked about and the situation. But some people including language learners think that speaking is difficult. However, some language learners are not interested in speaking lesson. One of the reasons is the teacher doesnt give them an interesting activity. To make them interested and easy to catch what the teacher teaches, the teacher should give them interesting activities because speaking will be easy if it is always practiced. When they practice it in real situation, it means that they dont need to imagine, they can see, hear, feel the situation directly. It will make materials be more memorable. Thus, in this research, the researcher used realia to improve students speaking ability, because realia is real object that can be used as a medium in teaching learning process and most of students are interested in it.

The objectives of this research were to describe the implementation of realia to improve students speaking ability in procedure text and to identify the improvement of the students speaking ability in procedure text.

The subjects of this research were the ninth grade of students MTs.Mathalibul Huda Mlonggo Jepara in the academic year of 2010/2011. The number of the subjects was 44 students. This research was a classroom action research. The process of this research was conducted in three stages, including cycle 1, cycle 2, and cycle 3. The data were collected by using observation guide in order to know the events in the classroom during teaching learning process. Besides that, she also used test to get the students score, in order to know the improvement of students ability in speaking from their score. The data were analyzed by using quantitative analysis.

In this research, the researcher used kinds of realia. In the first cycle, the researcher used candles, match and candle holder. Then, in second cycle she used water faucet, soap and towel. In third cycle, she used pencils and sharpener.

The result of research shows that realia used in teaching speaking procedure text with the ninth grade of students MTs Mathalibul Huda Jepara in The Academic Year of 2010/2011 can improve students speaking ability. This successfulness can be seen from the result of students average score and good responses by students. The result after getting all of the treatment using realia, the students average score increased in line with the increase of the students achievement in each cycle. Before getting the treatment students average score was 4.3, and after giving treatment was 6.8, so it increased 2.4.the average score of students in the first cycle was 4.9, second cycle was 5.2, and the third cycle was 6.8.

Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that by using realia in teaching speaking, teacher can improve students ability in speaking. And it is hoped that it can be valuable as the information resource for students, teachers, and the researcher herself.

The background of the study in this research, reading is one of important language skill that the students have to read English material for their subject, most of students are interested in reading the English written material such as; book, novel, article and text. Based on the phenomena that textbook has a great role in teaching learning, because textbook are important for students to prepare and fulfill experiences in the good process. So, the English teacher should be able to decide whether the contents of the textbook are suitable with the current curriculum or not. In this study, the writer choose content analysis of reading materials in English on Sky textbook because it is one of the genres that must be mastered by Ninth Year Students of Junior High School. The problems of this research can be stated as follow: 1. What kind of genre contained in the reading passages found in English on Sky textbook for 9th grade of Junior High School published by Erlangga? 2. What is the lexical density of reading text in English on Sky textbook for 9th grade of Junior High School published by Erlangga? The objectives of this study are (1) to find out the kind of genre contained in the reading passage found in English on Sky textbook for 9th grade of Junior High School published by Erlangga, (2) to find out the lexical density of reading text based on English on Sky textbook for 9th grade level of Junior High School. The research approach used is library research in content analysis. The data collected from reading texts found in English on Sky textbook. There are 10 reading texts which are categorized into different kinds of text. The result of the analysis showes that there are three genre which are used in English on Sky textbook for 9th grade of Junior High School published by Erlangga. They are procedure, report, narrative text and these genres fulfilled the KTSP English syllabus requirement. The lexical density of reading text in English on Sky textbook for 9th grade of Junior High School published by Erlangga is around 50%- 60% (quite lexical density). It means that the reading texts are quite lexical densities. It means that the text is not difficult, easy to understand and suitable for students.

This thesis base on phenomena which happen in school, there was how many students like reading but they do not comprehend what they read. Teacher uses technique to teach students that often makes students feels boring to join English lesson. 

The thesis discusses the effectiveness of using team word-webbing in teaching reading, especially in increasing students reading comprehension The study is aimed at responding the following question: (1) how is the use of team word-webbing in increasing students reading comprehension? (2) Is team word-webbing effective to increase students reading comprehension?. This thesis uses an experimental method in conducting research. The population in this study is the tenth year students of MA Darul Amanah Sukorejo Kendal in academic year of 2010/2011. The number of the population is 156 students. In taking the sample, the writer used sampling random technique. Class X A was chosen as an experimental class who were taught reading comprehension using team word-webbing and class X D as a control class who were taught reading comprehension conventionally. The research design used was experimental design. The instrument used to collect the data was reading comprehension test or multiple choice tests because students tests paper can be easily and quickly scored. The assessment of the test result was focused students reading comprehension in text. 

The finding research shows that: (1) Team word-webbing prove that using it can make good score in conducting test, especially in comprehending the text. It looks from student score. (2) Team word-webbing is effective in teaching reading especially in increasing students reading comprehension. It looks from the atmosphere or activities that happen in each class. The technique to analyze the data was t-test formula. It was used to determine whether or not there was a significant difference between the average score of the experimental and the control class. The average of post- test of experiment class was 88, 9. Which were higher than the average of post test of the control class 80, 91. The t-test result (5, 144) was higher than the t- table (2, 0000). Since the t-test was higher than t- table, the hypothesis is accepted. It means that there is a significant difference in reading comprehension between students who are taught reading comprehension using team word-webbing and those who are taught by lecturing ( without team word-webbing).

Based on the result of this research, the writer suggest that team word-webbing may be used as alternative media in teaching reading especially in teaching reading text type, in order that the students can comprehend text more easily and more interested in reading activity.

This thesis discusses the analysis of reading exercises in Developing English Competencies 1 in term of aim of exercises, text type, type of reading exercises and relevancy with KTSP Curriculum. The background of study is the importance of a good textbook for a guide in teaching and learning process and reading exercises are one of the content of textbook to improve the students skill. The study is aimed at responding the following questions; (1) To which extent of reading exercises in :Developing English Competencies 1 an English textbook for Senior High School Grade X Published by pusat perbukuan Departement Pendidikan Nasional.are relevant with KTSP?, (2) what types of reading exercises are employed in Developing English Competencies 1?. The topic is discussed through library research. The reading exercises in Developing English Competencies 1 are used as data. The data gathered by reading, identification, classification, simplification and analysis. All data then analyzed by using evaluating textbook (content analysis).

The result of analysis reveals that in term of aim of exercise, the Reading Exercises are sufficient enough to improve the students ability in reading skill. In the term of type of texts, all reading exercises are based on type of reading exercises. In term of relevance with KTSP Curriculum, the exercises of textbook do not cover all reading materials demanded in Curriculum, but there are two materials that are not in the textbook. In term of type of reading exercise, all type of reading exercises are covered in the textbook.

So, the reading exercises in Developing English Competencies 1 are relevant with some aspects of reading exercise in term of Aim of exercise and Relevance with KTSP Curriculum. While the reading exercises in this textbook do not cover some of aspects in term of Type of Texts and Type of Reading Exercise.

In learning speaking skill, the students often find some problems. The problem frequently found is that their native language causes them difficult to use the foreign language. Other reason is because of motivation lack to practice the second language in daily conversation. They are also too shy and afraid to take part in the conversation. Many factors can cause the problem of the students’ speaking skills namely the students’ interest, the material, and the media among others including the technique in teaching English. Many techniques can be applied including role play because many research findings say that this technique is effective to use in teaching speaking.

Role play is very important in teaching speaking because it gives students an opportunity to practice communicating in different social contexts and in different social roles. In addition, it also allows students to be creative and to put themselves in another person’s place for a while. According to Stephen D. Hattings based on his observation in the conversation class, the role play would seem to be the ideal activity in which students could use their English creatively and it aims to stimulate a conversation situation in which students might find themselves and give them an opportunity to practice and develop their communication skill.

For these reasons, the writer is interested in analyzing the use of role play in teaching speaking for the students of the ninth grade in Islamic Junior High School Soebono Mantofani Jombang-Ciputat, Tangerang. She also wants to know the advantages and the problems encountered by learners and teachers in using it.

The Effectiveness of Using Table-Chart as a Medium in Teaching Simple Future Tense (An Experimental Research with the Eighth Graders of MTs AL-ASROR Semarang in the Academic Year of 2010/2011).

Abstract

The Background of this study is based on phenomenon that most English learners especially in MTs AL-ASROR faced difficulties on mastering Simple Future Tense. The students felt difficulties on mastering the material caused the teacher tend to teach them classically. So that, the researcher used Table-Chart as a medium in teaching Simple Future Tense for the eighth grade students of MTs AL-ASROR Semarang.

This study is an Experimental research. The statement of the problem in this study is how is the effectiveness of Table-Chart as a Medium in Teaching Simple Future for the eighth graders of MTs AL-ASROR Semarang in the academic year of 2010/2011? The objective of this study is to find out the effectiveness of using Table-Chart as a medium in teaching Simple Future Tense for the eighth graders of MTs AL-ASROR Semarang in the academic year of 2010/2011.

The population of this research was the eighth grade students of MTs AL-ASROR Semarang which consists of 220 students and divided into six classes. Sampling technique is used by researcher is cluster random sampling where the experimental class (VIII A) and control class (VIII B) as sample. The VIII A was taught by using Table-Chart, while the VIII B was taught without Table-Chart (just conventional teaching). The writer gave objective grammar test of Simple Future Tense to gather the data. The test had been tried out to find out the validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discriminating power before it was used to gather the data. The formula that was used to analyze the data was t-test. It was used to determine whether there was a significance difference between students scores in experimental class and students scores in control class or not.

After the data had been collected by using test, it was found that the pre-test average of the experimental group was 57.75 and control group was 57.00. While, the post-test average of the experimental group was 77.50 and control group was 67.25. The obtained t-test was 7.10, whereas the t-table was 1.98 for alpha ( ) 5%. The result of t-test score was higher than t-table (7.10 > 1.98). It was meant that Ha was accepted while Ho was rejected. Since t-test score was higher than the t-table, Table-Chart was effective medium in improving students grammar achievement of Simple Future Tense in Madrasah Tsanawiyah AL-ASROR Gunungpati Semarang in the academic year of 2010/ 2011. Finally the writer suggests to the teachers that they should use Table-Chart as a medium in teaching Simple Future Tense.

Learning English involves the mastery of four language skill. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing. The seventh grades students of MTs Darul Mujahadah get difficulties to make good writing especially writing descriptive text which involved in genre. Almost of them get difficulties to understand descriptive text. In this research, the researcher used Bits and Pieces game to improve students writing skill on descriptive text. The researcher used game because it is one of teaching techniques to solve students difficulties in writing descriptive text. The objectives of this study are:

(1) To describe the implementation of Bits and Pieces game to improve students writing skill on descriptive texts

(2) To identify the improvement of students writing skill on descriptive texts after being taught using Bits and Pieces game.

The study was conducted at MTs Darul Mujahadah Prupuk-Margasari-Tegal. The number of the subjects was 26 students. This research is classroom action research. It was done through three cycles. The researcher used observation checklist, documentation and test to collect thee data. The researcher used descriptive quantitative to analyze the data. Statistic analysis is used to analyze the data about the result of observation checklist and the result of test on descriptive text.

Result of the study shows that by using Bits and Pieces game can improve students writing skill on descriptive texts at the seventh grades of MTs Darul Mujahadah in the academic year of 2010-2011. The criteria of writing assessment involve; content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. This successful can be seen from the result of students average score and good responses by students. The result after getting all of the treatment using Bits and Pieces game, the students average score increased in line with the increase of the students achievement in each cycle. Students average score from the pre cycle was 46.71, first cycle was 51.41, second cycle was 63.83 and third cycle was 65.48. 

Finally the result of this study showed that students writing on descriptive texts improved in each cycle after they were taught by using Bits and Pieces game. It was singed by their improvements of each test result.

The Background of this study is focused on the effective method to teach English especially writing on recount texts. The students who study English as second language still get difficulty in writing because writing is more complex if it is compared with the other skill. So the researcher thought that there should be a solution to solve that problem. The researcher tried to use concept map as a method solve the problem and to improve students writing ability especially on recount texts. This research is about the use of concept map as method to help and to improve students writing ability on recount texts of the Eight Grade Students of SMP H. Isriati Baiturrahman Semarang in the Academic Year of 2011/2012. Concept maps are tools for organizing and representing knowledge. They include concepts, usually enclosed in circles or boxes of some type, and relationships between concepts or propositions, indicated by a connecting line between two concepts. This research is aimed to find the answer to the following research questions:how is the use of using concept map to improve students writing ability in teaching recount texts? And the objective of research is to find out the use of using concept map to improve students writing ability in teaching recount texts.The population of the research was the eight grade students of SMP H Isriati Baiturrahman Semarang. The research method was an experimental research, which conducted in two classes; the experimental group (VIII A) and control group (VIII C) as sample. The VIII A was taught by using concept map, while the VIII C was taught without concept map (conventional method). The writer gave listening test to gather the data. The test had been tried out to find out the validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discriminating power before it was used to gather the data. The data were obtained by employing the relevant with pre test and post test. The formula that used to analyze the data was t-test. It was used to determine whether or not there was a significance difference between students score in experimental group and students score in control group.In the result of post test of experiment class was 75.58 which where higher than the control class 70.73. It means that writing a recount text by concept map was better than the writing recount text without concept map. The result of the calculation using the t-test showed that t value : 3. 446 and t table for α: 5% was 1.68. It means that t value was higher than t table {3.446> 1.68}. It can be concluded that there is a significant difference in the student writing score of the eighth year students of SMP H. Isriati in academic year of 2011/2012 between students who have been taught writing a recount text by using concept map and those who have been taught by using a conventional learning or lecturing.

Writing is one way to communicate in English by expressing the ideas through organizing our thought into good arrangement of written text. It involves the mastery of all elements in the target language such as organization, content, grammar, punctuation, spelling, mechanics, and also style and quality of expressions. It involves complex process. The writer considers that writing is the hardest skill for people who learn English because in writing process, students will face many difficulties in transferring thought and ideas in writing form. One of this problems solving is by using interactive medium such as documentary video. This study is about the effectiveness of documentary video as media to improve news item text writing skill of the tenth grade of SMA N 1 Kaliwungu Kendal in the academic year of 2010/2011. The statement of the problem in this study is; how effective is the use of documentary video to improve students ability in writing news item text at the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Kaliwungu Kendal in academic year of 2010/2011? The objective of this study is to find out the effectiveness of documentary videos as media in the teaching of news item text writing for the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Kaliwungu Kendal. The population of this research was the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Kaliwungu Kendal. The research method was an experimental research, which conducted in two classes; the experimental group (X C) and control group (X F) was. The X C was taught by using documentary video, while the X F was taught without documentary video (using text). The writer gave writing test to gather the data. There were two test; pre test and post test. The formula that was used to analyze the data was t-test. It was used to determine whether there was a significance difference between students score in experimental group and students score in control group. After the data had been collected by using test, it was found that the pretest average of the experimental group was 63.6 and control group was 62.7. While, the post-test average of the experimental group was 76.7 and control group was 70.7. The obtained t-test was 3.029, whereas the t-table was 1.67 for a = 5%. The t-test score was higher than the t-table (3.029 > 1.67). It was meant that Ha was accepted while Ho was rejected. Since t-test score was higher than the t-table, documentary video was effective media in improving students news item text writing in SMA N 1 Kaliwungu Kendal. Based on the finding, the writer assumes that documentary video may be used as one of alternative medium in the teaching writing of news item text. Based on the data, there was a significance difference in the achievement between students in class X C who were taught news item text through the use of documentary video and students in class X F who were taught vii news item text without using documentary video (using text only). It was meant that the use of documentary video as media in the teaching of writing news item text was very effective. Documentary video could be used to stimulate students consentration, sensation, attention and desire. Beside that, documentary video constructed students critical thinking and built students ideas. Finally, documentary video could help the achievement of learning success.

The background of the study is that The Jakarta Post is one of printed journalisms, of course, it uses written language. In fact, The Jakarta Post has communicative language and English writing. As ELT students, mostly ELT students of IAIN Walisongo have to be able to write English well. They have to be able to transform their knowledge and idea into written language. To make communicative and advanced writing like The Jakarta Post, ELT students do not violence writing aspects one of which is English collocations, especially English grammatical collocations.

The English grammatical collocation is a part of writing aspects which will give essential impact if we understand it inasmuch as essential material in writing English language. Non-native English writers usually ignore it because of their limitation of knowing it.

The writer in this study identifies the kinds of English grammatical collocation as used by The Jakarta Post to get contributions to the writing course, especially at English department in Tarbiyah faculty at IAIN Walisongo. The writing work which is published is a good source to get new knowledge as the adding knowledge in writing course

The objectives of this study are to identify kinds of English grammatical collocation found in The Jakarta Post, to identify purposes of using each grammatical collocation based on grammatical rules, to identify the contributions of this study to writing course.

Qualitative research gives priority to analyze data. In this research, the researcher analyzes the words, sentences, and phrases of The Jakarta Post editorials issued on November 2010. Then, he analyzes more to get the contributions of the result of identifying English grammatical collocations in The Jakarta Post editorials issued on November 2010 to the writing course.

The data are taken from The Jakarta Post editorials issued on November 2010 and other supporting data related to the object study by reading inasmuch as it is kinds of printed journalism presented in written language.

After comprehending and analyzing The Jakarta Post editorials on November 2010, the researcher concludes as follow; English grammatical collocation is used to convey as close to the original language of English as possible, without violence grammar and meaning. The Jakarta Post used them in many types. So, the English grammatical collocations are found in The Jakarta Post editorials.

This thesis discusses the effectiveness of using basic questioning with picture to improve the students descriptive writing skill. The background of the study is the students often face difficulties in writing descriptive texts, so the writer wants to help the students to write a descriptive text well by using basic questioning with picture. The study is aimed at responding the question: How is the effectiveness of using basic questioning with picture to improve the students descriptive writing skill? The topic is discussed through the experimental research at the seventh grade of SMP N 31 Semarang in the academic year of 2011/2012. Class VII E and VII F are used as the data source to find out the effectiveness of using basic questioning with picture to improve the students descriptive writing skill. The data is gathered through test and docummentation. In taking the sample, the writer used simple random sampling technique. Class VII E was chosen as experimental class who were taught writing descriptive text using basic questioning with picture and class VII F as control class who were taught writing descriptive text without using basic questioning with picture. The instrument used to collect the data was writing test or essay test. The assessment of the test result was focused on the five elements of writing (contents, organization, vocabulary, grammar and mechanic).The technique to analyze the data was t-test formula. It was used to determine whether there is or there is not a significant difference between the average score of the experimental and the control class. The average of post- test of experiment class was 71.17 which were higher than the average of post test of the control class 57.83. Based on the calculation result of t-test is obtained tcount (8.581) was higher than the ttable (1.67). Since the tcount was higher than ttable, the hypothesis is accepted. It means that there is a significant difference in writing skill improvement between students who are taught writing descriptive text by using basic questioning with picture and those who are taught by lecturing ( without basic questioning with picture).Based on the result of this research, the writer suggests that basic questioning with picture may be used as alternative technique in teaching writing especially in teaching writing descriptive text, in order that the students are able to write more easily and more interesting in writing activity.
